The night of the asteroid strike changes everything for Thriver MacThrivey, a 29-year-old space explorer from Earth.
One moment, he is discussing flagella with his multicellular granddaughter, Alex Smith; the next, watching with horror as mutated creatures eat each other.
He knows these creatures came from an alien world but he can't prove it - at least not without some respirating mitochondria.
The evolved, thriving man knows that his thriving life is over. He acquires some respirating mitochondria and is reborn as the hero who will save the world from mutated creatures.
However, Thriver finds himself troubled by his thriving ideals and becomes overwhelmed with moral questions. Will his conscience allow him to do whatever is needed to stop the mutated creatures?
