The Curse of the Solid Hat
A Horror Story
by tessamurphy
Whilst investigating the death of a local mechanic, a grateful doctor called Albert Bogtrotter uncovers a legend about a supernaturally-cursed, solid hat circulating throughout Australia. As soon as anyone uses the hat, he or she has exactly 400 days left to live.
The doomed few appear to be ordinary people during day to day life, but when photographed, they look grey. A marked person feels like a damp dog to touch.
Albert gets hold of the hat, refusing to believe the superstition. A collage of images flash into his mind: a giant Kangeroo balancing on a backward mechanic, an old newspaper headline about an unfortunate accident, a hooded cat ranting about toenails and a drinking well located in a rural place.
When Albert notices his legs have dog-like properties, he realises that the curse of the solid hat is true and calls in his wife, a detective called Chantal Humble, to help.
Chantal examines the hat and willingly submits herself to the curse. She finds that the same visions flash before his eyes. She finds the giant Kangeroo balancing on a backward mechanic particularly chilling. She joins the queue for a supernatural death.
Albert and Chantal pursue a quest to uncover the meaning of the visions, starting with a search for the hooded cat. Will they be able to stop the curse before their time is up?
