The Curse of the Damp Hat
A Horror Story
by Dove Windsor
Whilst investigating the death of a local computer programmer, a generous hairdresser called Harriet Russell uncovers a legend about a supernaturally-cursed, damp hat circulating throughout Wales. As soon as anyone uses the hat, he or she has exactly 124 days left to live.
The doomed few appear to be ordinary people during day to day life, but when photographed, they look translucent. A marked person feels like a chilly fox to touch.
Harriet gets hold of the hat, refusing to believe the superstition. A collage of images flash into her mind: a sweltering kitten balancing on a breezy computer programmer, an old newspaper headline about a magic accident, a hooded rabbit ranting about ankles and a drinking well located in a crowded place.
When Harriet notices her toes have fox-like properties, she realises that the curse of the damp hat is true and calls in her grandfather, a shopkeeper called Cuthbert Ferguson, to help.
Cuthbert examines the hat and willingly submits himself to the curse. He finds that the same visions flash before his eyes. He finds the sweltering kitten balancing on a breezy computer programmer particularly chilling. He joins the queue for a supernatural death.
Harriet and Cuthbert pursue a quest to uncover the meaning of the visions, starting with a search for the hooded rabbit. Will they be able to stop the curse before their time is up?
